The ISO and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) announced the publication of additional Climate Change Amendments last month, which apply to existing and new ISO Management Systems, emphasising ISO’s commitment to climate action.

The amendment, which includes ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 27001, is simple but aligns with the increased global concern around climate change and how ISO standards may play a part in addressing these concerns. The focus being that integrating climate considerations into management systems embeds climate awareness and action into the organisations operations.

The amendment adds to current clauses 4.1 (understanding the organisation and its context) and 4.2 (understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties).

The amendments are –

4.1 – Add the following sentence at the end of the sub clause:

The organisation shall determine whether climate change is a relevant issue.

4.2 – Add the following note at the end of the sub clause:

NOTE Relevant interested parties can have requirements related to climate change.

These amendments are applicable with immediate effect, and whilst they do not change the overall intent of the clauses, they will seek to ensure that climate change is considered and addressed within the management system(s). The subject of climate change will no doubt be on many organisation’s minds in one form or another and it is certainly not intended to be a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Climate change relevance and impact will vary depending on sector, products, services and location and of course the context of the applicable standard(s).

The amendment is available as a free download from the ISO website and your current ISO certification remains valid – there will be no transition process required. However, do please take time to consider the amendments and how they may affect your organisation, management system, planning, operation and monitoring in order to ensure that your system is effective in addressing any climate change considerations, as these areas will be discussed at your certification visit(s).
